ASTM A403 covers wrought austenitic stainless steel fittings for pressure and high-temperature service. In the 304 family, it includes the grades 304, 304L and 304H. All three share the familiar 18-8 stainless steel chemistry but with different carbon limits and processing requirements.
SS304 buttweld pipe fittings provide excellent general-purpose corrosion resistance in water, mild chemicals and atmospheric conditions, along with good formability and weldability. These fittings are widely used in process water systems, cooling lines, structural spools, food and beverage plants and many general engineering applications.
SS304L buttweld pipe fittings are produced with a lower maximum carbon content, which improves resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding. SS304H buttweld pipe fittings are manufactured with a higher carbon content and special heat treatment to provide better creep strength at elevated temperatures. When corrosion conditions are moderate and cleanliness is important, SS304 buttweld pipe fittings are a practical choice for process water lines, cooling water systems, general utility piping and non-critical chemical services. They are commonly used for equipment connections, manifolds and structural spools where standard 18-8 stainless steel performance is sufficient.
Where extensive welding is involved, SS304L buttweld pipe fittings are preferred because the lower carbon level minimises the risk of intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone. This makes 304L a better option for welded headers, nozzle connections, tank outlets and complex spools that cannot be post-weld heat-treated.
For systems operating at higher temperatures, such as certain steam lines, heater coils and refinery services, SS304H buttweld pipe fittings provide improved creep strength and are specified when design codes require H-grade material.
